It's been more than 25 years since we last saw Maverick, Goose, Ice Man and the rest of the "Top Gun" gang fly the friendly skies, and rumors have persisted about a possible sequel.
Now, star Tom Cruise has confirmed his interest, and revealed that he's met with producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Tony Scott about the possibility.
The ultra-patriotic '80s hit features Cruise as a hotshot pilot codenamed Maverick, as he makes his way through an elite flight school, where he must get over a tragic accident in order to become the best of the best. It also features a popular soundtrack, including the ubiquitous Berlin ballad "Take My Breath Away." The film earned over
$350 million worldwide.
While promoting his latest action sequel, "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol," Cruise talked about the idea. "I said to Tony (Scott), I want to make another movie with him... Tony and I and Jerry (Bruckheimer), we never thought that we would do it again. Then they started to come to us with these ideas of where it is now. I thought, 'Wow, that would be... what we could do now,'" Cruise told MTV.
The sequel's actual plot is currently up in the air. It was reported earlier that Christopher McQuarrie ("Usual Suspects") was writing a script, but Cruise says that's no longer the case. "I don't think Chris is going to write it," Cruise said. "Chris is directing 'One Shot' right now, which I'm acting. We've got to go back in January and finish it."
"If we can find a story that suits what we all want to do," Cruise continued, "we all want to make a film that is in the same kind of tone as the other one and shoot it in the same way as we shot 'Top Gun.'"
The 1986 original, which also starred Val Kilmer, Anthony Edwards and Kelly McGillis, is being re-released in 3D in 2012.
Cruise, meanwhile, has a busy year ahead of him. After wrapping the musical "Rock of Ages," he and McQuarrie are teaming for the Jack Reacher adaptation "One Shot." And then there are the SF films "Horizons" (with Jessica Chastain) and "All You Need is Kill. In other words, it may be a while before we get to see "Top Gun 2."
