What is a surveillance camera?
Surveillance camera is as the name suggests. It is a tool that allows you to monitor and identify people within the camera's reach through live and recorded videos. You have the option to play them to your monitor, your computer and even your Android phones via live viewing or via a local recorder. There are two types of surveillance cameras available today: IP cameras and CCTV cameras. Both of these cameras aim for the same purpose and that is to monitor and record events.
What is a CCTV camera?
CCTV stands for Closed Circuit Television. This is one of the first surveillance cameras that went out in the market. It was developed in 1942 in Germany, but they are only used by rocket scientist to monitor their invention from afar. Their very first appearance in the US was in 1973 in Times Square, New York City. In 1980, almost every corner in the New York has CCTVs. It became a huge hit in the US and UK since then.
How CCTV works?
CCTV comes in four basic parts: the lens or the cameras, DVR, monitor and cables. The cameras capture the images and then send it to the DVR through cables and into the monitor for viewing. The DVR has two basic purposes: to convert the signal into video analog and to record the video into its hard disk drive. CCTV cameras are wired cameras. This means that you would have to place the cameras on a specific location and then them all the way to the monitoring station. This is one of the drawbacks of CCTV camera, because if you are planning to install the cameras outdoor far from the DVR, you would require a handful of wirings. This is not just costly but they are not pleasant to look at. Because of this issue, they invented the wireless CCTV called the IP camera.
What is an IP camera?
IP stands for Internet Protocol. It is a digital camera recorder that uses digital technology instead of analog like with CCTVs. While IP cameras were made available just recently. It became huge hit in the 21st century and up until today. The company AXIS is the first developer of IP cameras, although the first commercialized IP camera was released by Intellio.
How IP camera works?
IP cameras come in two basic parts: the lens or the camera and the NVR. Now, you have to understand that IP Camera have built in capability to convert the files into a digital file by itself, which can be remotely, viewed online using a specified IP address. It does not require any hardware, not even the NVR. The NVR or the Network Video Recorder are merely there to record the images, allowing you to play back some of the videos by date and time. If recording is essential to you, then you would have to invest on the NVR or you can use your computer hard disk to record the videos. NVR are mostly used by big companies that have multiple IP cameras. The connection is completely unwired, as long as you have wireless internet connection that can send and receive signals from the IP to the modem and vice versa.
