The dystopian vision for our robotic future may be something like Ross Douthat's recent column in The New York Times conjured up: a world where love dolls (along with human sex workers) become a market-based solution to violent misogyny self-proclaimed "involuntary celibates" - men like Alek Minassian, who is accused of killing 10 people in Toronto last month.
In addition, humans have an amazing ability to feel empathy and love for inanimate objects and non-human beings. People feel affection for their cats, their plants, their cars. A 2011 University of Calgary study found that social instincts kicked in when people sat facing a motorized block of wood: subjects began assigning the block a male sex doll role.
Some were afraid of him, others wanted to dance with him. And this is a block of wood, not a silicone doll, with custom-made nipples and soft, squishy teeth. Matthias Scheutz, who directs the Human-Lifelike Sex Doll Interaction Lab at Tufts University, told me that preventing humans from forming (one-sided) emotional bonds with robots is "essentially impossible".
But why limit yourself in sex when you have the opportunity to buy a sex doll that can bring you the immense pleasure you are looking for. If you don't have a partner at the moment, this can be an alternative. You can get that experience from this "toy".
Whatever Tolochko does, the act of having any kind of relationship with a non-human object is "a kind of paraphilia (sexual deviance)," says Jansen. Douthat's column prompted immediate outrage because it appears to take Minassian's grievances at face value and dehumanizes sex workers.
